Week 4

MAT 521 -- the project guidelines are posted (and have been emailed to you).  Download, print, and read it.  Start planning now.

MAT 308 -- Due Tuesday (2/17) 48, 49, 50.  Due Thursday is the reading assignment for article 3.

MAT 271 -- Due Tuesday (2/17) Unit 3 #23, 24, 27, 29, 30.  Due Thursday is #32, which is a reading assignment.

All students -- please try as best you can to explain you answers in writing.  We want to go beyond "What is the answer?" and also answer the question "Why do you think your answer is correct?"  Justification using sentences is the next level.  Whether you are in math, math ed, or CS, you must learn to explain yourself clearly and concisely.  That is a skill that will be useful in all walks of life.

It's ok to be stuck.  Keep trying.  Yes we can!

Permission Numbers

Hi Students,
This is a reminder that permission numbers (magic numbers) expire on the 12th.  So if you have not registered for a course yet, do so ASAP.

Monday the 16th is a holiday, and there are no classes and offices will be closed.

Lastly some words of encouragement.  Math is hard.  Go slow.  It's ok to be stuck.  Never give up.  Ask for help.  Don't get behind.  Think, think think!

Teachers, Future Teachers, and Concerned Parents

I strongly recommend that you read the book "What's Math Got to Do With it?" by Jo Boaler.  It's an indictment of direct instruction, and outlines how and why active learning has benefits to students.  The book contains analysis of research that highlights how minorities and women are especially hurt by traditional instruction and tracking.  Boaler also outlines the steps one can take as a parent or teacher to be an advocate for children and students.  It can be used as a resource to educate parents, teachers, and administrators. Knowledge is power!
